USVI, other Caribbean islands feel tremors as the 6.6-magnitude quake impacted the Atlantic Ocean

The USGS reported two large seismic events, a 6.6-magnitude earthquake in the North Atlantic Ocean and a subsequent 4.2-magnitude earthquake in the Leeward Islands Monday afternoon. The larger earthquake caused tremors that were felt in the US Virgin Islands and other Caribbean islands. The Sixth Regional Emergency Management Agency said it is closely monitoring these seismic events and will issue any necessary follow-up actions, according to a warning from the agency.

The first earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.6, struck the North Atlantic Ocean at a depth of 10 km. The earthquake was primarily located 274.4 km (170.1 mi) northeast of Codrington, Antigua and Barbuda. It has also been detected at distances from 330.4 km (204.9 mi) northeast of Saint John, Antigua and Barbuda, to 413.0 km (256.1 mi) north of Saint Rose, Guadeloupe. Just over half an hour later, at 5:22 pm, a second seismic event was recorded. This time, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake was detected in the Leeward Islands. The epicenter was located at a depth of 9 kilometers, and the coordinates were 19.821 North, 61.189 West. It was noted to be located 250.6 km (155.4 mi) northeast of Codrington, Antigua and Barbuda, and 389.8 km (241.7 mi) north of St. Rose, Guadeloupe.

Although tremors were felt in the US Virgin Islands, no damage or injuries were immediately reported. USGS and VITEMA are monitoring the situation closely, and more information will be released as it becomes available.
