Armizan: The Standing Order on Earthquake Disaster Management should be updated regularly

KOTA KINABALU, July 13 – The Standing Order on Earthquake Disaster Management Operations (PTO) should be updated regularly to ensure the country is prepared for any such eventuality, says Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah, Sarawak Affairs and Special Functions) Datuk Armizan Muhammad Ali .

He said that the updates should keep pace with the times and the latest technologies used by the various concerned agencies.

According to him, among the earthquake-related technologies and applications that should be reflected in the modernization process are the digital mapping technology of the Department of Surveying and Mapping Malaysia (Jupem); Remote Sensing; Light detection and ranging (LiDAR).

“The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) as the lead national disaster management agency is responsible for conducting workshops to update the earthquake programme, specifically for obtaining inputs and advisory services from the various agencies involved.

“The earthquake PTO is also very important because we are always dealing with severe and unexpected weather changes,” he said in a statement after the conclusion of the Earthquake PTO Review Workshop here tonight.

Armizan said the revision of the earthquake emergency document should be done in line with the disaster management landscape in the country as well as at the international level, in addition to amending the necessary matters to ensure its effectiveness.

“Based on empirical evidence, it is not impossible for an earthquake to occur in Malaysia, so sharing the latest information and capabilities of each agency through this workshop is very important,” he said.

Meanwhile, when reporters met with him after the concert, he said Earthquake PTO was first released in 2011, and was due for a revision.

He said the cooperation of the agencies concerned in various aspects including disaster management, economy, technology and community participation can better ensure the country’s preparedness.

“An earthquake risk assessment conducted in Sabah found that (the state) is located in an area where it can occur. In terms of districts, the most dangerous place is Ranau and some other districts face medium risk such as Kota Belud, Tuaran and Kota Marudu.

“Therefore, we must be prepared, in dealing with disasters, as the administrative aspects must be strengthened during the disaster, and post-disaster such as providing assistance to the victims, but we also need to be proactive in assessing the risks of disasters,” he said. – Bernama
