In the midst of a desperate war, and two weeks after another rebellion nearly toppled the Kremlin, Major General Ivan Popov’s voice message is nothing short of an earthquake.

The voice message contains none of Yevgeny Prigozhin’s loud hysteria in Telegram.

Major General Popov speaks in the blunt, precise and direct style of a combat officer.

He appeals directly to his men, the “dear gladiators” (Major-General Popov’s callsign is Spartak, so the reference is to classical history), on whose loyalty he seems to feel he can count.

The Russian war effort has been plagued by officer grievances since the war began.

Many of the frustrations of lower and middle-ranking officers and men were posted on the semi-official war blogs.

Later, Prigozhin, Wagner’s disgraced mercenary chief, emerges as a valve to anger at ammunition shortages, poor logistics, and general incompetence.

This is the first time a senior officer has expressed such complaints publicly.

Major General Popov’s grumbling was about the lack of counter-battery fire and artillery reconnaissance.

Nothing new in this war. In fact, you can find plenty of soldiers on the Ukrainian side of the ranks with similar complaints.

But Major General Popov goes further: he explicitly accuses the army’s senior officer – Valery Gerasimov, although he does not use his name – of stabbing the army in the back.

He and his men have succeeded — defying the predictions of even many Russian commentators — in standing up to the fury of Ukraine’s counterattack.

Moreover, they refused to join Prigozhin’s rebellion last month, and held their ground.

On Tuesday this week, the Ukrainians fired a British Stormshadow missile at a hotel in the occupied city of Berdyansk, turning it into rubble.

The hotel was a command post for the 58th Army. Major General Popov reportedly survived – he was not there when the missile hit.
