Nurses working at Robert Wood Johnson in New Brunswick, NJ, went on strike earlier this week, and 96% of nurses working with expired contracts voted in favor of the strike. The chief nursing officer is alleged to be trying to break up nurses’ unions by targeting young nurses and holding meetings without union representation.

One of the main reasons for the nurses’ strike is that the 1.5% wage increase (3% in 2 years) is unable to cover the increasing cost of living. Nurses are told that a pay increase is a “good deal” because they are “the highest paid nurses in the state,” when in reality, nurses are required to pay higher health insurance premiums for less than top-tier coverage. Nurses also claim to be overworked and unable to care for patients with unequal patient-to-caregiver ratios. In addition, nurses working at the RWJ are required to pay to stand and cannot take days off due to staffing issues.

RWJ of New Brunswick is a Level 1 Trauma Hospital Cancer Center with high-acuity or high-priority patients. Judy Daniela, an RWJ registered nurse and president of the United Steelworkers Local 4-200 Union, announced the rejection of the hospital’s latest offer of reconciliation, and ten days’ notice to hospital management after the strike vote. Negotiations are still underway as the nurses simultaneously prepare for a picket line.

Daniela says, “The local 4-200 nurses [are] Representing RWJ New Brunswick. [The] The basic reasons [we’re striking] Are safe hiring, maximum insurance benefits, to get a fair contract, appropriate raise, and cap benefits. There must be an agreement or conclusion that we hope today or tomorrow awaiting today’s meeting.”

The RWJ issued a statement saying, “The hospital has responded to union staffing questions by adding more than 100 full-time staff registered nurses along with additional clinical care and pediatric technologies, and is continuing to add registered nursing staff; and has proposed a five-member staffing and practice collaborative board.” unionists and five members of management to continue to address employment concerns.”

As of today, no common ground has been found between the nurses at RWJ and management.
