A 7.2-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Alaska triggers a tsunami warning

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska late Saturday, triggering a brief tsunami warning for the southern part of the state, officials said.

The USGS said on social media that the quake occurred 65.8 miles south of Sand Point, Alaska, at 10:48 p.m.

The US National Weather Service sent a tsunami warning for coastal Alaska from Chinyake Bay to Unimac Pass, saying the quake occurred at a depth of 13 miles. The agency called off the alert about an hour after the first alert.

The quake occurred throughout the Aleutian Islands, Alaska Peninsula and Cook Inlet regions, according to the Alaska Earthquake Center.

KTUU-TV reported that there were an estimated eight aftershocks in the same area of ​​Alaska, including one with a magnitude of 5.0 within three minutes of the original quake.
