No tsunami warning in British Columbia after 7.2m earthquake in Alaska

The coast of British Columbia was safe from any tsunami threats after a large earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska late Saturday night, according to BC Emergency Information.

The magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit the Alaska Peninsula at 10:48 p.m. and was felt widely throughout the Aleutian Islands, Alaska Peninsula and Cook Inlet regions, according to the Alaska Earthquake Center.

The earthquake triggered a brief tsunami warning for southern Alaska, but it was canceled about an hour later.

In British Columbia, the Emergency Info BC Twitter account briefly said it was reviewing the tsunami risk for the province, but quickly confirmed there was no risk for BC.

In Kodiak, Alaska, sirens warned of a possible tsunami and sent people driving to shelters late at night, according to video posted on social media.

Shortly after a tsunami warning was issued, the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency said there was no threat to the tidal wave.

There were an estimated eight aftershocks in the same area of ​​Alaska, including magnitude 5.0 tremors within three minutes of the original quake, according to Alaskan television station KTUU-TV.

The US Meteorological Service said the quake hit at a depth of 21 kilometres.
