CAAP: No damage occurred at Cotabato and Ginsan airports after the 5.3-magnitude Sarangani earthquake

The Philippine Civil Aviation Authority (CAAP) said on Tuesday that Cotabato Airport and General Santos Airport did not suffer damage to their facilities after a 5.3-magnitude earthquake hit Maitum in Sarangani on Monday night.

“Managers of both airports immediately assessed and inspected the structures and confirmed that there was no significant damage to the terminal buildings and other airport facilities,” CAAP said in a statement.

CAAP said General Santos Airport has resumed normal flight operations, with both the terminal building and the runway fully open and operational.

However, Cotabato Airport remained closed for development from July 6 to August 18, as stated in the Notice to Pilots (NOTAM) it issued to inform stakeholders.

The closure is due to the continued overlay of asphalt and the repainting of the runway markings. During this period, the airport will not operate fixed-wing aircraft and will not receive any commercial flights.

The 5.3-magnitude quake, which was tectonic in origin, struck at 11:35 p.m., according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

PHIVOLCS said Intensity IV was recorded in T’boli, south of Cotabato, while Intensity III was felt in Maitum and Maasim in Sarangani; Lake Cebu, Nuralla, and Tupi in South Cotabato; and General Santos City.

Meanwhile, II intensity was recorded in the city of Koronadal, Panga, Polomoluc and Tambakan. Jose Abad Santos and Balute Island in West Davao.

PHIVOLCS also reported the severity of the following instruments:

Density IV – T’boli, South Cotabato Density III – Panga, Noralla, Tupi, South Cotabato; Hope, Islan, and Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat; Hope, Islan, and Kalamansig, Sultan of Kudarat; Maytum and Kyamba, Sarangani Intensity II – Don Marcelino, Western Davao; Maasim and Malongon, Sarangani; Bagumpian and Lebak, Sultan of Kudarat; Coronation City, South Cotabato; Severe General Santos City – President Quirino, Lampayong and Columbus; Tambakan, Tantangan, and Polomolok, South Cotabato

PHIVOLCS said no damage was expected, but aftershocks may occur.

The association said it had coordinated with local authorities and agencies to prepare for these possible aftershocks.
