Nagaland: Government Disaster Management conducts mock earthquake training at Kohima College of Science, Gotsuma

The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has emphasized the importance of having a disaster management structure in schools and colleges with the Principal as the head.

In a mock earthquake exercise at Jotsuma’s Kohima College of Science on Tuesday, Khrulo Koza Lohi, assistant director of training and education at NSDMA, called for the formation of a disaster management team, and the development of a disaster response plan that includes hazard identification, safety assessment, resource mapping, both internal and external, And form various disaster management teams and plan evacuation with designated assembly areas.

The mock exercise was organized by NSDMA, in collaboration with the Kohima District Disaster Management Authority, at the college in order to build resilience within educational institutions and the community at large.

Lohi briefed the college students on the importance of disaster preparedness, citing examples of the damage caused by the Bhuj earthquake in 2001.

She highlighted the roles of the different teams within the disaster management structure which include the disaster awareness team for warning and information dissemination, the evacuation team for each class, the search and rescue team, the first aid team, the fire safety team, and the bus safety team. .

Explaining the importance of the mock exercise exercise, Lohey said it serves as a valuable tool for testing readiness and improving the correct methods of conducting such exercises.

She added, “Educating the public about disaster management measures can significantly reduce the impact of disasters, although it may not be possible to completely prevent risks.”

The same mock exercise will be held at the Living Tree School, Tsebuji, Kohima Prefecture on July 20.
