A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck central Turkey and northwest Syria on February 6, 2023, causing widespread death and destruction. It was one of the most powerful earthquakes in the region in a century, and it was followed by strong aftershocks as well as another very powerful earthquake on February 20. Nearly 4.1 million people are in urgent need of life-saving assistance, including 2.7 million internally displaced people.

Emergency sites set up as temporary shelters currently accommodate 1.9 million displaced people, with a particular focus on supporting vulnerable women and children.
