A series of earthquakes rocked the Reckian Peninsula overnight, as the strongest earthquakes struck the region at 11:36 pm at a scale of 5.0 on the Richter scale. Residents describe the first hearing of the roar of the earth, followed by tremors shaking their homes and awakening sleeping children. Earthquakes continued into the morning with the strongest aftershocks measuring 4.6 at 5:46 am and 4.3 at 6:23 am, according to the Icelandic Weather Office.

Earthquakes arose at the southwestern tip of the Reykjanes peninsula, south of Keflavík airport, near the town of Grindavik and the Blue Lake. An earthquake can be felt in Reykjavik.

Over the past few months, the area around Grindavik has experienced a frequent earthquake with GPS-linked sensors showing that the Earth is rising, probably due to the accumulation of underground magma.

Earlier this year, there were concerns that seismic activity was a harbinger of a possible volcanic eruption, but at that time the authorities considered the risk of eruption to be very low. It was the last time a volcano erupted on the Recanese Peninsula about 800 years ago.
