Scientists at the University of Otago, New Zealand, after examining the genes of a species of algae growing off the country’s coast, have discovered a record number of earthquakes in the region that occurred hundreds of years ago.

Researchers have revealed that the “kelp bull” genes, which are plentiful on the shores of the southern island of New Zealand, bear the signatures of an earthquake 800 years ago, according to the Science X Network.

The earthquake was so severe that it raised some parts of the sea floor above the water line. The researchers note that the catastrophe was to reveal some of the newly formed parts of the sea floor, allowing the kelp to occupy new surfaces. The report added that kelp is known to be aggressive seaweed that migrates when new opportunities for growth and expansion come.

They discovered that kelp that lived along a 25-kilometer stretch that was likely to be thrown into the air during the earthquake, was different from their neighbors of the same species on both sides, who had not experienced the same geological violence.

“We were laid off when we looked,” John Waters, a professor of zoology at the University of Otago, told the New York Times. “We can see where the elevation was just by looking at genetics.”

The results showed that kelp is a type of regional algae, according to researchers. The study shows evidence of how old and new kelp remained without mixing for more than 800 years despite being very close in geographical distance.
