That 70s House: The Studio Glass Collection highlights the rare obsession
Anyone who walks in a duplex in Christchurch is known to the masses as the “1970s home” or “twins” will see a rainbow set of sparkling glass on the window sills.
The owners Tracy Jerin and Nicky Crouch sold the house, but they will take most of the set they spent 27 years putting together.
“The crazy colors they do were in artistic glass,” Gerin says. “I think that’s what attracted us.”

“The first pieces we bought still have, but we lost a lot of them in the 2011 earthquake.”

The collection was “Too Big” to start with, and consisted of about 150 pieces collected from around the world, including some notable pieces from Murano, Italy’s most famous blowing area.

“I think we may have lost 40 or 50 pieces in the earthquake.
“We didn’t rebuild the group; in fact we did a little of it too. Some of the pieces we were fond of gave to friends and family, so they are everywhere.”
She thinks she might be able to “put her down again” and has a lot of pieces in the boxes she plans to sell now as she moves.
“We have often talked about cutting it into our 20 favorite pieces, but it didn’t work very well.”
Outside of movie buffs, the couple is “totally amateurs” when it comes to buying glass. They choose based on color and texture, rather than studios and blower glass.
“Many of them are related to beauty and the way they look at us. And of course fishing.”

It has been much easier to catch interesting cheaper items from garage sales, flea markets and the Riccarton market, she says. Glass from the 1960s and 1970s was not fashionable.
However, in the past fifteen or twenty years, people started collecting it, and it became relatively valuable.
While they bought two more expensive pieces from Murano, Geerin is not sure “without anyone looking” if there are any valuable pieces in the set. The first piece they bought costs only $ 10.
“I searched the internet and got to know a few pieces. They might go for a few hundred to 300 dollars a piece, but again, some of them deserve less than that.”
Italian glass is strongly preferred, but some of its best discoveries have been in the United States, with “amazing flea markets”.
The Rose Bowl Flley Market in California, held at the stadium where the annual American Football Championship takes place, to give an idea of the size of a thing, has produced some gems.
“We re-acquired several very large and very sticky Italian items from there that were very cheap,” she says.
“A lot of glass has a purpose, which is really cool. You can just put small flowers in it.

The glass works well with the 1970s background.
Not that Jiren did that. It will be like gilding tulips.
“They just stand out on their own.”
where do I start
Sotheby’s auctions say glass and studio art are the easiest groups to start with. There are “options for every budget”, from old perfume bottles to murano chandeliers.
Even the Wall Street Journal recommends collecting glass for art investors as an option for growth – it’s a relatively new premonition of collectors, so yields are likely to be great.

Glass collection can be inexpensive. Small items are easy to find in stores and markets.
Check your local store and you’ll find it right, the 1970s studio glass – vases, plates and even hand-blown lamp covers – can be easily found, usually at very reasonable rates.
Glass art – hand blown glass embossed or purely artistic, rather than functional – appears in op stores sometimes as well, but is frequently found in antique stores, online merchants and auctions.
If you think more about your group, get to know the big names in studio and glass art: Murano, Lalique from France, Sam Herman, Dale Chihuly, Deborah Czeresko (who you might know from showcasing the premium glass blowing competition on Netflix, blown away).

For contemporary glass, Whanganui’s New Zealand Glassworks, the National Artistic Glass Center, is offered by blowing and blown glass students.
