Fears of a tsunami after a 7.8-meter earthquake jolts the coast off Alaska

A tsunami warning was placed after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Alaska this morning.

The earthquake, which was six miles deep, would be the strongest around the world if it had not been reduced.

Horrific voices were captured in dramatic video clips taken by residents living in Kodiak, Alaska, with sirens and helicopters rising above.

Residents were advised to move to “high ground” and travel away from the beaches due to fears of the tsunami.

One of the witnesses said: “The bed and the curtains were walking. I felt a very long earthquake! I felt at Homer, ack at the end of spitting in the Lands End.”

Another said: “He felt very dizzy.”

The US Geological Survey said the warning was in effect in southern Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula.

The next week’s tsunami activity could strike at points along the coast of Alaska.

An alert was issued

The warning said the level of tsunami risk was also being evaluated for other coasts in the United States and Canada in the Pacific in North America.

“Based on the initial seismic criteria, serious tsunamis can occur for coasts located 300 km from the epicenter,” the warning said.

The German Research Center for Geosciences of the GFZ said the quake was 10 km deep

The US Geological Survey confirmed that the earthquake reading is still at 7.8 degrees.
