Many people in the Chamhay district of Mizoram, bordering Myanmar, spend nights out of their homes in makeshift tents after a series of earthquakes hit the northeastern state within a month, an official said.

So far, at least 22 earthquakes have rocked four regions – Chambhai, Setwal, Seha and Chip since June 18. Tremors ranged from 4.2 to 5.5 in size. Champhai was the worst affected area.

Champion District Commissioner Maria Z Zuali told PTI that the temporary tents were set up in several villages by people and the area administration provided tarpaulins, water drums, solar lights and first aid kits to them.

She said that biscuits and surazu (nutritional supplements) were provided for the elderly.

According to the Deputy Commissioner, at least 20 earthquakes struck the Shanghai region in one month.

She said that more than 16 villages were affected by earthquakes, and more than 170 houses were damaged, including churches and community halls.

John Zothanmaoya Vanai, assistant minister of Dong Tang Yong Meizu in Donglang, one of the most affected villages in Chamhay District, said that at least five temporary camps have been established.

On Monday, the government sent three teams of doctors, consisting of psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and medical specialists, to the earthquake-stricken areas to help people who were traumatized after the earthquakes.

The teams are currently touring the affected villages in the Chambae region.

Many people are concerned about repeated earthquakes, Dr. Si Lal Hreikima, a psychiatrist at a government hospital who leads a team, told PTI.

“We do advise people who suffer from panic, regardless of medical care,” he said.

On Tuesday, the state government sent the Joint Secretary of the Department of Geology and Mineral Resources H to Piakima, who is also a geologist, to the Chambhai region to study and assess the cause of earthquakes.

According to Zwali, some geologists from the University of Mizoram will also visit earthquake-stricken villages in the Chambae region.

Earlier in June, Prime Minister Zuramathangha asked the center to send expert seismologists or geophysicists to assess the ground situation and the exact cause of the earthquakes.
