100 sensors will be installed around Wellington for live earthquake updates

At least 100 earthquake sensors are installed in central Wellington to provide live updates in a major earthquake.

This means minutes after a major earthquake a Wellington can use an app to see if a building is safe to occupy, or if they need to be evacuated.

Chief Technology Officer at Canterbury Seismic (CSI) Dr. Hamish Avery said the scale of the technology could be the first in the world.

“This is the biggest step we have taken in earthquake information in this country for a few years now.”

Avery said people in Wellington were already downloading and using the app, which is called Sentinel.

In the major earthquake, the sensor network will create a set of shaky “heat maps” of sensor data.

Information can be sent to users within two minutes of the earthquake.

Avery said Sentinel and its website are free for public use.

It is expected that the installation of at least 100 sensors will be completed by September.

The sensors will be installed primarily in traffic control cabinets throughout the city.

He said the sensors will not exceed 200 meters, which creates a “dense net” to ensure accurate measurements of vibration.

“Over several hundreds of meters, you can move from hard rock to reclaimed land to ancient swamp areas and river basins in parts of the CBD.

The sensors will send live earthquake updates directly to the Sentinel app, which is free for the public and city council to access.

“This means that the vibration will vary greatly over small distances and helps explain why some of the Wellington buildings were badly damaged in the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake, and had to be demolished, while other nearby buildings were not damaged.”

Last month, Wellington property developer Ian Cassells, who installed earthquake sensors in four of his buildings, said more needed to be done to paint an accurate picture of how the city behaved during earthquakes.

“It is tremendous value and we must do it all over the city because we are the earthquake laboratory in Wellington.”

There are 724 buildings registered as being prone to earthquakes in the Wellington area.

There are 724 buildings registered as earthquake-prone in the Wellington area, many of which are in the capital’s central business district.

The partnership between the Council and CSI includes the free exchange of information from the network for the use of the City Council in exchange for accessing the infrastructure to enable system installation.

Sensors were installed in Christchurch in 2018, followed by Waimacariere County Council in 2019.
