The government pays 60% of Zagreb’s post-earthquake reconstruction

Zagreb, July 24, 2020 – The government on Friday sent to parliament a bill on the reconstruction of the Zagreb region after the March earthquake, according to which Prime Minister Andrei Blinkovich said the government would cover 60% of costs and local governments and 20% for each owner.

He added that a reconstruction fund would be established to oversee the work and raise funds for reconstruction and would act as a one-stop shop for all earthquake-affected citizens.

The Prime Minister indicated that 100 billion kroner had already been secured for emergency reforms through a review of the 2020 budget and from the Environmental Protection Fund, and 41 million kronor had been allocated from the condensation boiler fund, and that the government had paid the costs of accommodation for people who lost their homes in the earthquake in student housing Zagreb .

Blinkovic said that a loan of 200 million US dollars had been agreed with the World Bank, talks were under way on a loan from the Development Bank of the Council of Europe, and a request had been submitted to the European Solidarity Fund.

The Minister of Construction and Urban Planning Darko Horvat said that reconstruction will be a major financial challenge and that the state will cover the bulk of the expenses. A detailed program of measures will be developed for the pace of reconstruction, depending on the funding.

As for public buildings, he said that the founders would cover their complete reconstruction.

The Minister of Culture, Nina Apulin Jinsink, said that the reconstruction will envisage the use of the latest technologies to increase the value of Zagreb buildings and preserve cultural and historical aspects.

Finance Minister Zdravko Marik said he hoped that the reconstruction would contribute to economic activity in Croatia.
