In the worst-case scenario in New South Wales, fires have burned more than 4 million hectares (40,000 square kilometers or 9.9 million hectares), destroying more than 1,300 homes and seeking shelter in thousands of other places.
Across the country, 20 people have been killed, including three volunteer firefighters – most in New South Wales.
