For the first time in its history, the country has begun implementing the Peru Earthquake Warning System (SASPe), which will warn thousands of citizens of earthquake waves caused by a major earthquake a few seconds ago.

Julio Kuroiwa, the first seismic station in Peru, was implemented on Friday at Morro Solar in Chorrillos District, Lima.

Tavira clarified that SASPe does not predict an earthquake, but after a major event – it alerts people seconds before earthquakes hit an urban area.

He explained that “had the warning system been in place during the 2007 Pisco earthquake, the alert would have been received 40 seconds ago in Lima.”

“It is a warning that seismic waves – which cause shaking in the ground – are on their way and give people time to protect themselves,” the IGP chief added.

Tavira pointed out that earthquake waves are traveling at 5 or 6 kilometers per second – and for this reason – “the reaction time will be less for people close to the epicenter, while remote people will have more time to evacuate.”

“The further away the city is from the epicenter, the more time is available to protect people. For example, if an earthquake occurs in a southern province, the population will be warned – as soon as it occurs – that the seismic waves are heading to Lima. This is an early warning.”

In addition, he indicated that Julio Kuroiwa Station is the key because – in addition to a sensor – it connects with others in Hormigas (60 km from the beach) and the San Lorenzo Islands, which are farthest from the coastal region and closer to the region where large earthquakes occur.
