Clashes broke out at Hong Kong Chinese University – BBC News
After more than five months of protests, Hong Kong law has pushed for "complete collapse".
The warning came when the territory saw a sharp escalation in violence and came one day earlier, when police were shooting an activist.
Peking supporters later opposed anti-government protesters.
The demonstrations continued to clash with police at central business and universities on Tuesday.
According to AFP news agency, hundreds of protest masks were seen throwing bricks and other objects, police were using a tear gas to pull them back.
But thousands of office workers also went out on the streets, shouting peacefully: "Fight for freedom, stay with Hong Kong!"
