New research from the Australian National University (ANU) has shown that Australia is vulnerable to shallow and potentially devastating earthquakes.

The research comes in the international forefront to estimate earthquake sources and will help scientists calculate the earthquake’s time, location, and characteristics.

Using high-frequency seismic waves and detailed three-dimensional terrestrial models, researchers were able to simulate shallow earthquakes with more precision.

Lead researcher, Dr. Babak Hajrani, says that routine seismic techniques are not suitable for simulating shallow earthquakes.

“We have shown how simulating high-frequency seismic waves can improve these results.”

Shallow earthquakes occur when seismic activity occurs within the highest 30 kilometers of the Earth’s crust, and according to Dr. Hijrani, they constitute the majority of Earth’s seismic activity.

“These earthquakes are also among the most devastating natural disasters,” said Dr. Hajrani.

The research compared traditional and new simulation methods with the frequency of the 2016 Peterman ranges earthquake in Australia.

There have been four earthquakes in this region over the past 30 years that have recorded a force of five or higher.

Dr. Hajrani said: “The earthquake of the Peterman series in 2016 occurred at a depth of one kilometer and tore 20 kilometers along the surface of the earth.”

“Our simulations have shown that at shallow depths from 1 to 10 kilometers, the use of higher frequencies and three-dimensional Earth models is essential. We hope that our research will clarify steps that must be taken to correctly estimate the sources of shallow earthquakes in Australia.”

Dr. also hopes. Hajarani that the bodies responsible for earthquake simulations adapt their methods in the future.

“It is important that the authorities that report earthquakes ultimately use high frequency simulations in high-resolution 3D Earth models. It is a more computationally expensive method, but the accuracy with which they simulate earthquakes means that they are the only way forward,” Dr. Hajrani said. .

Dr. Hijrani notes that Australians should not be concerned with earthquakes as much as people feel in places where seismic activity recurs such as Japan and California.

Dr. Hajrani said: “This is just a reminder that the Earth is a dynamic planet and no place on Earth is completely free of natural disasters such as shallow and devastating earthquakes.”
