Oregon state scientists use big data to meet societal challenges

The University of Oregon is part of a new effort funded by the National Science Foundation to help data scientists collaborate in efforts to tackle challenges such as earthquake preparedness, securing electrical power systems, and improving environmental health across the Northwest Pacific.

“We are proud to have a leading role with our fellow scientists at Oregon State University and Portland State University,” said Jake Searcy, Assistant Director of Artificial Intelligence for both the UO Data Science Initiative and Advanced Computing Research Services and Co-Leader. About the project. “This scholarship will help us to reinforce current research at Amman University and on the state with expertise and training in data science.”

The project will benefit from the growing capabilities of robust computing technologies that can help researchers tackle key challenges through the use of large data sets and complex modeling, said lead researcher Brett Tyler, director of the Center for Genome Research and Bio-Computing at Ohio State University.

“This funding will provide access to these technologies to a group of scientists in institutions across our region to help them discover discoveries in areas including biology, forestry, engineering, energy and marine science,” Tyler said.

Portland State lead Jason Podrabsky, Professor of Biology.

“This is a great example of how the Ohio State University’s data science initiative allows us to combine the strengths with other Oregon universities to help create a strong, multidisciplinary effort in the state,” said Bill Crisco, executive director of the Oregon State University Data Science Initiative and university professor. biology. “Across disciplines, working like this allows us to make early, faster and better decisions.”

Among the major societal challenges addressed by the project are earthquakes, electric power and comprehensive health infrastructure in the region. This funding will assist researchers to:

Combine massive amounts of data to produce accurate and actionable forecasts of earthquake and tsunami impacts and how to mitigate them. Develop advanced management systems that can detect, respond to and recover from cyber attacks on electrical power systems. Obtain environmental data including on harmful chemicals, microbial and plankton groups, endangered species, plant and animal health, and built environment features, and integrate these complex data into models that can benefit best management practices.

The project will create a team of data analysis and training specialists in the three universities to spread expertise and training materials in the field of data integration, data analytics and machine learning. Team leaders will provide research consultancy and training to researchers across the region.

Partnerships will be established with other colleges and universities in Oregon and southern Washington, including many institutions that Hispanic serve and serve Native Americans, through research collaboration and summer research opportunities for students, faculty training, curriculum development, and online program activities collaboratively.

The multi-college training program will include short courses and seminars, contributions to existing data analysis courses, webinars and online materials, and a group of users across organizations. Project leaders expect to establish a long-term presence in the region after the grant life cycle.

Research partners for the project include Lewis & Clark College, Washington State Triple-City University, Blue Mountain Community College, Lynn Benton Community College, Western Oregon State University, Washington State University Vancouver, Reed College, Chemical Society College, Southern Oregon State University, Oregon University of Health and Science, Heritage University, Lynnfield College and Mt. Hood Community College.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
