Turkey will "feel comfortable" if the EU cannot accept membership, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told the BBC.
Speaking to HARDtalk's Zeinab Badawi, Turkey said he was capable of "his two feet".
The country also denied jailing 150 journalists, saying it had only two prisoners holding press cards.
Meanwhile, Turkey extended the detention of local director Amnesty International and nine others.
Idil Eser was arrested on July 5 at a digital security and information management workshop, along with seven other rights activists and two foreign trainers.
