Experts are urging Kentuckians to prepare for Earthquake Awareness Month

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – February is Earthquake Awareness Month, and the Kentucky Cabinet for Public Protection is encouraging Kentuckians to review their earthquake coverage policies.

Kentucky is often described as the heart of the United States, but it is also located in the heart of active seismic zones, making the state vulnerable to earthquakes.

“In general, we have one or two earthquakes, and maybe more in a few parts, that people in Kentucky can feel each year,” said UK seismologist Dr. Seth Carpenter.

Areas with peak activity include eastern Tennessee, the Wabash Valley, and the New Madrid area, which is located in parts of western Kentucky. Because of the New Madrid Fault, Kentucky is one of 16 states most at risk of earthquakes, according to the US Geological Survey.

“The New Madrid area is the most active of the seismic areas. The most earthquakes occur annually there. Generally two miles to 10 miles in Kentucky, and even deeper in some locations, are the faults that cause the earthquakes that we investigate,” Dr. Carpenter said. “We worry about it when we think about the risk of earthquakes.”

However, earthquakes cannot only occur in these areas; In 1980, Bath County was hit by a strong earthquake that was felt in the Maysville area to the north.

“We are investigating those faults now; these are the ones that if an earthquake occurred today, would cause significant damage in the immediate area and even more widely throughout the state,” Dr. Carpenter said.

Since this month is Earthquake Awareness Month, people across the state are encouraged to educate and prepare themselves for potential earthquakes. Standard homeowners insurance policies generally do not cover earthquake damage, but consumers can purchase earthquake coverage as an enhancement to their existing policy.
