Arkansas, USA – Many in Arkansas were shocked when they felt a 5.1 magnitude earthquake on Friday evening, originating in central Oklahoma.

Although Arkansas isn't typically known for being a place for seismic events, the Natural State still feels its fair share of earthquakes, according to the Arkansas Geological Survey (AGS).

For example, the state dealt with some particularly strong earthquakes exceeding magnitude 7.5 in northeastern Arkansas between 1811 and 1812. “Huts collapsed, people were frightened, and the ground surface was severely altered by liquefaction,” the AGS said.

In 1843, a specific area in southeastern Poinsett County was hit by two major earthquakes in the same year, measuring 4.2 and 6.2 in magnitude.

New Madrid Seismic Zone

The most seismically active area east of the Rocky Mountains is an area in the Mississippi Valley called the New Madrid Seismic Zone, which includes much of northeastern Arkansas.

The New Madrid Seismic Zone is an area in southern Mississippi and northeastern Arkansas where thousands of small to moderate earthquakes have been recorded since 1974.

According to the USGS, the faults that produce these earthquakes are not easy to see on the surface of the New Madrid Seismic Zone, because they have been eroded by fluvial processes and buried beneath river sediments.

The area is located deep within the Earth and consists of a series of faults (fractures) at a weak point in the Earth's crust. The New Madrid earthquake zone extends about 150 miles from Arkansas into Missouri and Illinois.
