State orders to close wells and allow changes after a major earthquake near Prague

PRAGUE, Okla. (KFOR) – The Oklahoma Corporation Commission's Oil and Gas Conservation Division has issued another change directive in the wake of a 5.1 magnitude earthquake in Prague.

The previous guidance was issued on February 3, but the new guidance includes disposal wells operating within six miles of the epicenter of the 5.1 magnitude earthquake on February 2, 2024.

According to the OCC, the procedures required by the newer guidance:

Shutdown of disposal wells must begin within 3 miles of the epicenter and at a depth below the Woodford Formation, and be completed by February 17. The gradual closure process is necessary to avoid sudden pressure changes that may lead to further seismic activity. In the Six Mile Zone area, no new permits will be issued for disposal deeper than the Woodford Formation
