Victoria earthquake: Shaking was felt as far away as Melbourne but authorities say no damage was reported | Victoria

Thousands of Victoria residents woke up to an earthquake that struck large parts of the state early in the morning.

The 4.3 magnitude quake struck near Leongatha in the state's Gippsland region, 135 kilometers south-east of Melbourne, at 12.49am today.

The Australian government's geoscience agency said the tremors were felt as far north as Sunbury, 38 kilometers northwest of Melbourne, to Wilson Promontory National Park in the south.

The Meteorological Office reported that there was no threat of a tsunami following the quake.

More than 4,900 people reported that they felt the earthquake, whose epicenter was at a depth of 8 kilometers in the town of Minyan.

There were about 10,000 earthquakes of this magnitude in the world every year.

Just 10 hours earlier, the city of Melbourne of the same name on the other side of the world felt a similar earthquake.

According to the US Geological Survey, a 4.0-magnitude earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, off the coast of Melbourne, Florida.

Adam Pascal, chief scientist at the Center for Earthquake Research, said Victoria's quake was the largest to hit the state since a 5.0 magnitude quake shook residents in the southwest in October.

“This is certainly at a scale where you would expect some minor damage to be seen but we haven't heard any reports,” Pascal told 3AW.

The state has seen more earthquakes in the past two years than in the previous decade or two, the seismologist said.

“It is still within the normal range of activity for our region of the world,” he said.

The largest earthquake in Victoria's history, measuring 5.9, struck in 2019, triggering thousands of insurance claims for damage as tremors reached as far away as Canberra, Sydney and Adelaide.
