A 5.7 magnitude earthquake has struck off the Big Island of Hawaii, shaking the state.

The quake occurred just after 10 a.m. local time near the southeast side of Mauna Loa, according to the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency.

It was originally reported that it happened off the coast of Kao.

A tsunami is not expected, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, but “several areas experienced strong tremors.”

Some locals posted on X, reporting that this was the largest earthquake they had ever felt, and they reported homes shaking.

Some on Oahu also reported shaking, HawaiiNewsNow reported.

“My house on Oahu shook more than it ever has in the last 15 years or so that I can remember,” one person wrote on X.

The quake's magnitude was initially determined to be 6.3, then moments later, it was downgraded to 5.7.

It was initially reported to be 6 miles deep, but now the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has reported a depth of 21 miles.
