A 4.6 magnitude earthquake strikes Southern California

A 4.6-magnitude earthquake shook Southern California on Friday afternoon, striking an area near Malibu.

The quake occurred at a depth of about 8 miles at 1:47 p.m. local time. It has not caused any injuries or damage so far, according to the Associated Press, citing a response from the US Geological Survey.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said the earthquake was widely felt by city residents. All 106 fire stations were called to clear bridges, levees, power lines and residential buildings, according to KTLA.

The Associated Press reported that the US National Tsunami Warning Center has not yet occurred any tsunami.

Dr. Lucy Jones, an earthquake expert, warned of the possibility of another earthquake, and it could be larger.

“Every earthquake in California has about a 5% chance of being followed by something larger within the next couple of days, so there is a chance — very low — that we will have a larger event here,” Jones said, according to KTLA. “If we were to have a bigger earthquake, you would have to get down, take cover and hold on.”
