The investigation report says cracks appeared in 200 houses due to the earthquake

The investigation body constituted by Petrobangla concluded that cracks in buildings at Bibiana in Habiganj from February 1 to 3 were the result of earthquakes.

But local residents rejected the report as biased. They also warned against launching a protest campaign against the report.

Committee organizer Mizanur Rahman revealed the results on Saturday.

However, there has been no earthquake in Sylhet district in the past two months, according to the US Geological Survey.

Earlier, cracks appeared in more than 200 houses in Nabiganj upazila of Habiganj, which locals claimed was due to the excess earthquake in the Bibiana gas field.

Local residents said there has been loud sound and excessive tremors three to four times a day at the Bibiana gas field since February 1. More than 200 houses were torn apart in Inatganj and Digalpak union.

Later, the authorities formed a three-member panel to investigate the matter.

Mizanur Rahman said the report was submitted to the Petrobangla chairman.

“The accident that occurred in Bibiana was due to a natural earthquake. There is no human intervention here. Bibiana drilled well No. 27 and 28 according to its own plan. Among these wells, well No. 28 has already been drilled.” “It has been completed and there is a plan to drill well No. 27.”

Chalek Mia, president of the Digalpak Parishad Union, said the information provided in the investigation report was incorrect.

“We will protest the report collectively. Apart from this, we want to help the government recover compensation from Chevron for the damages caused to the general public.”

It may be noted that the Bibiana gas field is located at Karimpur under Inatganj Union of Nabiganj Upazila. It is financed by US-based Chevron.
