San Diego reports shaking as an earthquake swarm hits Southern California on Monday

EL CENTRO, Calif. — A series of more than a dozen earthquakes shook parts of Southern California early Monday, with the shaking felt by San Diego residents.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake swarm began at 12:36 a.m. PST (3:36 a.m. EDT) when a 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck less than two miles north-northwest of El Centro, California.

That quake was followed by at least 16 aftershocks over the next two hours, ranging in magnitude from 2.5 to 3.9, all centered near El Centro in Imperial County.

El Centro is about 30 miles east of the San Diego County border and more than 100 miles from San Diego, but city residents have filed reports of a weak tremor to the U.S. Geological Survey.

There were no reports of any damage from the series of early morning earthquakes in Southern California.
