Didn't you feel it? An earthquake shakes metro Austin early Saturday

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A 4.7 magnitude earthquake struck southeast of San Antonio, Texas, and was felt in metro Austin and as far north as Williamson County early Saturday morning.

According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the quake was located about two miles southeast of Falls City, Texas.

Their “Did You Feel It” map, based on user-generated reports, was generally cited from “weak” to “slight” in metro Austin at 12:32 a.m. Saturday.

They occur at the same time as gusty winds, and many may confuse shaking with gusty winds.

There was not just one earthquake in that general location this morning, but several. The 4.7-magnitude quake at 12:32 a.m. was the largest of at least seven quakes of magnitude 2.5 or higher that occurred Friday night into Saturday.

The first, larger quake was a magnitude 3.9 shock that occurred at 9:49 p.m. Friday.

Earthquakes of magnitude 4.0+ are rare in Texas

According to data compiled by KXAN digital data reporter Christopher Adams, there were only 69 recorded earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or stronger in the state as of February 7, 2024.

According to the USGS, fracking, mining, and dam building operations are all attributed to induced seismicity, where an earthquake is caused by human activity. In the south-central United States, a large number of recent earthquakes are believed to be caused by humans.
