Phivolcs: 4.7 magnitude earthquake hits Cagayan City

MANILA, Philippines – A 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck Cagayan town early Monday in an area frequently hit by earthquakes, government seismologists said.

The tectonic quake occurred 56 kilometers northwest of the area at 2:22 a.m., at a depth of 20 kilometers, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs said that this time, aftershocks are unlikely to occur after the earthquake.

Instrumental intensity III (weak) was recorded in Claveria, Cagayan, and intensity I (barely perceptible) was recorded in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur.

No severity was reported.

The felt intensity is the ground shaking that people actually felt and reported through the Phivolcs seismic intensity scale while the instrumental intensity was indicated by the ground shaking intensity measured by intensity meters in and around the central area.

In September 2023, five people were injured and minor damage was recorded after an earthquake struck Dallowiri Island.
