“On Sunday, I met up with some of my friends and we made plans for the next week and talked about our future. “All of that disappeared on Monday morning, and many of my friends and their families died in their homes,” says Muhammad Al-Hamdani, an Iraqi man who lives in Adiyaman, southern Turkey. . “We stayed under the rubble for a day, my leg was badly damaged and my brother lost his life,” Muhammad recalls, describing the horrors he faced on the night of the earthquake.

Muhammad moved to Turkey in 2015, after ISIS took control of his village and killed his uncle. As an expert in decoration, Mohammed got a good job and started building his life. “I worked for 5 years on many projects and saved money until I was able to open my own showroom 3 years ago. At that time, life and work were really good,” says Mohammed.

Unfortunately, the earthquake destroyed Muhammad's life's work. After leaving the hospital, he found that all his life's work had disappeared, and he was unable to save anything. “When I traveled from Iraq I left everything there, and after the earthquake I lost everything. Even my laptop that had all my clients’ data, including their debts, was gone. I was back to square one,” Mohammed explains.

Despite all this, and despite his bankruptcy, Muhammad did not give up. He joined the new market in Adıyaman, where he tried to win back some of his customers. I used the grant to buy some items and sold them to my clients for a small profit,” says Mohammed.
