More than 300 displaced families have returned to their earthquake-damaged homes in Dharma. Likewise, about 200 families in Bagshore and 100 families in Kumakh returned to their earthquake-affected homes.

“There is no possibility of rebuilding the damaged houses anytime soon. We started feeling sick due to the cold under the makeshift huts. We are obviously afraid to stay in the damaged house. But we have no alternative once we fall ill due to the cold,” said Mohan Damai of Dharma.

According to Tarak Khatri, head of Dharma's second ward, about 400 houses were destroyed or damaged due to the earthquake in the neighbourhood. Among them are 365 families who built temporary huts after receiving government aid. “More than 200 families have returned to their damaged homes after minor repairs were made. Only the victims whose homes were completely destroyed are staying in temporary shacks,” the ward chief said.

Likewise, hundreds of earthquake victims in Jajarkot and Rukum West returned to their partially damaged homes risking their lives. They said they chose to risk living in dangerous homes rather than risk getting sick from the cold.

The lack of proper shelter has left many displaced people falling ill, with reports indicating that as many as 36 people have died due to the cold in Jajarkot and Rukum West.
