Fracking was likely responsible for the 4.7 magnitude earthquake south of San Antonio

The South Texas earthquake that shook Austin and San Antonio has people wondering, Did you feel it? A 4.7 magnitude earthquake was recorded about 40 miles southeast of San Antonio on Saturday morning. There were reports of some tremors being felt as far north as Round Rock.

Experts say oil and gas exploration and extraction are largely responsible for the increasing number of Texas earthquakes. Saturday's earthquake caused only minor movement in Austin and Round Rock. San Antonio is much closer to the epicenter and there were reports of windows shaking and beds, sofas and chairs shaking.

“It shook my chair. The chandelier was swinging. Facebook in our area, I mean everyone was chiming in, everyone,” said Eric Casarez, who lives southeast of San Antonio in the city of Karnes.

The epicenter was in nearby Falls City, where experts say about 30 earthquakes have occurred this month.

“If we get a little one and it's just self-contained, weeks apart, we don't talk about it anymore. We kind of get used to it,” Casarez said.

“It's not something we want to see,” said Dr. Alexandros Savadis, director and principal investigator of the Texas Seismological and Earthquake Research Network (TexNet).

In the United States, California experiences the largest number of earthquakes that cause damage. But recently, experts say Texas is surpassing California in the number of low-intensity earthquakes. In South Texas this is largely due to hydraulic fracturing.

“In the South Texas region, we have seen that most earthquakes are due to oil and gas extraction,” Dr. Savadis said.

A seismic intensity map prepared by the US Geological Survey (USGS) shows that from south of San Antonio to Austin and Round Rock, tremors from Saturday's quake were classified as weak to light. But with seismic activity increasing statewide, oil field companies are now taking steps to try to reduce the intensity and frequency of quakes.

“I started TexNet 8 years ago. If you ask me, at the time there was a lot of denial at the time from people. But I think they know now. Now they know they have to do something, and they are working on it,” Dr. Savaidis said. “This is a very positive thing.”

The University of Texas at Austin professor says that even after changes are made, it could take years for seismic activity to slow. Which is no comfort to those who were shaken this weekend.

“This is the longest I've ever felt in my life,” Casarez said.

Last November, western Texas was hit by a 5.2 magnitude earthquake. It is one of the most powerful accidents in Texas history and occurred as oil field companies injected wastewater from fracking underground.
