Located at the end of a mid-block alley in the dense, pedestrian-focused environment of Russian Hill, Eric Domican and his team aimed to excavate to the lower level to access the new garden and add a partial fourth level to give the master bedroom a wonderful panoramic view – both from inside and from the cozy balcony in This residential project.

For its design identity and sculptural interiors, the Russian Hill Residence recently received an Honorable Mention at the 2023 American Architecture Awards from the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and the European Center for Architecture, Design and Urban Studies.

The house remained primarily intact in the years following Reconstruction.

The vision was to design an architectural piece that would activate the pedestrian alley and experience, interact with the scale and use care in developing a suitable project on its site.

The project prioritizes the preservation of an adjacent parcel of land and creates a connection to the landscape by combining the adjacent vacant parcel of land with the existing property.

By preserving the adjacent lot and taking advantage of the building's existing modest footprint, the project can achieve sweeping views of the city and San Francisco Bay while enhancing the building occupant experience through increased access to natural light, outdoor space, and fresh air.
