An earthquake struck San Diego, California on Friday and tremors were felt in other cities – Oceanside, Escondido and Vista. The USGS reported a magnitude 1.19 earthquake, 18 km near Warner Springs. Residents felt light tremors near the epicenter.

The earthquake occurred on the morning of 23 February 2024 at approximately 11.38 am local time, or approximately 18:35 GMT.

No injuries or damage have been reported to any of the buildings so far, as it was a minor earthquake.

People took to social media to confirm whether the earthquake had really happened, and that they were not alone.

“Does anyone feel the earthquake in San Diego right now?” wrote a user on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Another city resident who felt the tremors wrote: “There was just a strong earthquake. I felt it north of San Diego. It's strange that it didn't shake underground, it actually shook the house.”

Most San Diegans live near an active seismic fault.

The San Andreas network of three major faults can cause powerful earthquakes – up to magnitude 8 – which can generate strong shaking levels in San Diego. There is a 75% chance of one or more earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or greater hitting Southern California, based on a 30-year period, starting in 2014.

Southern California frequently experiences earthquakes, reminding residents of the hundreds of active faults spread throughout the region, leading to seismic activity.

Just last week, a series of earthquakes were reported near El Centro on Monday, the largest of which was a magnitude 4.8 just after midnight, causing some damage, according to the USGS.
