Kishida pledges to expand aid to Noto earthquake areas

Anamizu, Ishikawa Prefecture –

The central government will increase aid to those affected by the New Year's Day earthquake that rocked the Noto Peninsula, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said during his visit to the disaster area on Saturday.

“We will work together to help people in disaster areas restore their normal lives,” Kishida said at an evacuation center in Anamizu town, Ishikawa Prefecture.

The Prime Minister appears to intend to reflect the views of directly affected people in the government's reconstruction and support support measures.

This is Kishida's second visit to the area struck by the 7.6-magnitude earthquake.

An elderly man at the evacuation center told the Prime Minister that about 540 people were hoping to move into 280 housing units planned for reconstruction.

Kishida said the government would “strongly support” the construction of such housing, adding that financial concerns should not hinder the project.

Later in the day, Kishida traveled to the city of Wajima, in Ishikawa, and saw the damage to the rice fields of Shiroun Senmaeda overlooking the Sea of ​​Japan.
