A 5.6 magnitude earthquake shakes the Indonesian capital. There were no reports of casualties

JAKARTA, Indonesia — A moderate-magnitude earthquake late Sunday shook parts of Indonesia's main island of Java and the country's capital. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The US Geological Survey said the shallow quake measured 5.6 and occurred at a depth of 37.2 kilometers (23.11 miles) below the surface. The epicenter of the earthquake was 80 kilometers (29 miles) west-southwest of the coastal city of Belabuhanratu in West Java province.

The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency measured its initial magnitude at 5.7, at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). Variations in early measurements of earthquakes are common.

Daryono, who heads the agency's Earthquake and Tsunami Center, said that residents of several cities and villages felt the strong earthquake and caused panic among some.

Dariono, who like many Indonesians uses one name, said there was no risk of a tsunami, but warned of possible aftershocks.

High-rise buildings in the capital, Jakarta, swayed for several seconds, until two-storey houses shook violently in Bandung, the capital of West Java province, and in the cities of Bogor and Bekasi, affiliated with Jakarta.

Earthquakes occur frequently throughout the sprawling archipelago nation, but it is uncommon for Jakarta residents to feel them.

Indonesia, a seismically active archipelago with 270 million people, is vulnerable to seismic disturbances due to its location on major geological faults known as the “Ring of Fire” in the Pacific Ocean.

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake last year killed at least 602 people in the city of Cianjur in West Java. It was the deadliest in Indonesia since the 2018 earthquake and tsunami in Sulawesi killed more than 4,300 people.

In 2004, a very strong earthquake in the Indian Ocean triggered a tsunami that killed more than 230,000 people in a dozen countries, most of them in Indonesia's Aceh province.
