NAIROBI (Reuters) – Most of us have accepted COVID-19 face masks as an impractical, albeit necessary, safety measure. For the style conscious like James Maina Mwangi, however, they are a fashion opportunity not to be missed.
Mwangi’s brightly colored costumes and hats made him stand out even on the busy streets of Nairobi’s Umoja district, where no one ever seems to sleep.
Since the pandemic struck and Kenya made face masks mandatory, her outfits have become even more eye-catching. This week, the 59-year-old jack-of-all-trades modeled his collection of face masks for Reuters.
“The men knew how to wear clothes in black, brown, gray or dark blue. These were the colors of the men,” he told Reuters, wearing a bright yellow suit with a matching hat and mask. “God gave me wisdom and showed me all the different colors I can wear to be different from everyone else.”
Mwangi, who dropped out of school at age 12 because he couldn’t afford school fees, said he only had one shirt when he was a child, that he washed it every day and still made it wet.
People would laugh at him, but he promised himself that “one day I will be a star”.
He now has around 160 costumes, over 200 pairs of shoes and 300 hats in colors ranging from saffron yellow to grass green, scarlet and plum. Mwangi said his clothes attracted curiosity and then admirers when he started wearing them 25 years ago.
“Now you can see me wearing all kinds of colors,” he said.
Mwangi, who makes a living as a handyman, says he lends his costumes to members of his church and to street children who need them.
“Things have gotten more difficult now because of COVID-19. This country has no money,” he said.
