San Jose Earthquakes lose El Clasico to Los Angeles Galaxy

SAN JOSE – The San Jose Earthquakes are off to a frustrating start in their second year under Lucie Gonzalez.

The Quakes fell three goals down to rival Los Angeles Galaxy in their home opener and lost 3-1 on Saturday night in the 99th California Clásico at a sold-out PayPal Park.

The Quakes (0-2-0) had a 13-7 advantage in shots, but put just two shots into the frame. The Galaxy (1-0-1) had all seven of their shots on goal, including goals in the 18th, 43rd and 48th minutes.

The Quakes lost just two of 17 home games last season and qualified for the playoffs as the final seed. Their next chance to get their first point of the season will be at home next Saturday night against Vancouver (0-0-1).

Amahl Pellegrino, the top scorer in the Norwegian Premier League for the past two seasons, did not make an impact in his first match for the Quakes. By the start of the second half, he was joined by three more new players making their home debuts – defenders Bruno Wilson and Vitor Costa and striker Preston Goode.

Judd got the Earthquakes on the board against his former team in the 70th minute when he curled a loose ball in front of goal. Judd, 24, made 17 appearances for the Galaxy as a rookie last season.

Judd's goal prevented the Quakes from matching their worst ever loss in a home opener since joining MLS in 1996. Real Salt Lake won 3-0 to start the 2010 season when the Quakes played at Buck Shaw Stadium.

Both teams were coming off a disappointing season opener. FC Dallas beat the Quakes 2-1 with a goal in the fourth minute of extra time, while Lionel Messi scored in the second minute of extra time, giving Inter Miami a 1-1 draw in the Galaxy.
