San Jose Earthquakes celebrate their 50th anniversary with a loss in El Clásico

(KRON) – The San Jose Earthquakes are celebrating their 50th anniversary with their first match of the Major League Soccer season against the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday – known as the CalClasico – in a 3-1 loss.

The Earthquakes hosted the LA Galaxy at home at PayPal Park in San Jose. The 18,000-seat stadium will now be shared with San Francisco's Bay FC, the newest addition to the National Women's Soccer League.

“It's a game we take very personally,” Earthquakes coach Lucie Gonzalez said. “The fans do it, we do it, and the players, the new players are engaged – they understand the history. We want to take care of business in front of our fans. Rain or shine.”

The San Jose Earthquakes are off to a slow start after falling short of the 2024 US Open Cup in the first round. However, only eight American teams made the playoffs this year in total.

Last season, the Earthquakes scored 1.1 goals on average and conceded 1.2 goals on average. Although the Earthquakes averaged better than the Galaxy, conceding two per game, the Earthquakes were unable to come out on top in Saturday's match.

On Saturday, players signed posters and distributed more than 160 footballs to an after-school program at McKinley Elementary School. The Earthquakes also donated a check for $15,000 to America SCORES, one of the nonprofits responsible for organizing the after-school soccer program.

As part of their celebration, the 2003 MLS Champions have also created '50 Kits' available for purchase. This was the first item available for purchase, and Earthquakes will be releasing additional merchandise throughout the season.

The San Jose Earthquakes' next game will be against the Vancouver Whitecaps on March 6 at 7:30 p.m.
