China Earthquake: A 5.3 magnitude earthquake hits the Qinghai region of China

Beijing: A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck northwest China earlier today. According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, the quake struck the country's Qinghai region at 10:07 a.m. local time.

The center added that the epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 10 kilometers and was detected at 33.52 degrees north latitude and 93.01 degrees east longitude. The National Seismological Center in India also confirmed that the earthquake occurred today in China.

Earlier this year, China was hit by a devastating earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale in western Xinjiang. The earthquake killed three people and injured at least 74 others.

In December 2023, China reported its deadliest earthquake since 2010. On December 18, China's Gansu province was struck by a 6.2-magnitude earthquake that killed more than 100 people. 105 deaths were reported in the Gansu region and 11 deaths were confirmed in the Qinghai region.

Following the earthquake, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang ordered urgent search and rescue operations. The leaders urged first responders to conduct “large-scale search and rescue efforts, appropriate resettlement of affected people, and make maximum efforts to ensure the safety of people's lives and property.”
