Can solar flares cause Missouri earthquakes? Some say yes

As of today, scientists say you can't predict earthquakes in Missouri or anywhere else. However, there are those who now claim that solar flares could be linked to the shaking of the Earth, and there is some data to support their beliefs.

You may remember that a few weeks ago there was a small swarm of 8 earthquakes along the New Madrid Fault in Missouri. It occurred around the same time as a massive solar flare, Space Weather reported. This isn't the first time a big solar flare has followed a big earthquake in Missouri, but is there really a connection?

“There is a causal relationship between space weather and earthquakes,” says the official response from the USGS. They continue to say that there is no real data to link what happens on (or from) the Sun and earthquakes on Earth. Many disagree with their conclusion.

“Proton clusters from the Sun may be associated with large earthquakes,” Salon reported in a paper shared with Nature's Scientific Reports. The crux of the problem is whether the “motion of these charged particles” is sufficient to cause a seismic fault.

Consider the consequences if a real scientific connection could be made between solar flares and earthquakes such as those that occur along the New Madrid Fault in Missouri. This would make it possible to conduct some (but not all) earthquake observations or warnings in the event of a major solar event. This would be a game-changer for many places in America that suffer from major seismic faults, such as Missouri and, of course, California.

So far, the USGS says “maybe.” We'll see if new data can prove that the sun and earthquakes are indeed connected so we can understand when the imminent threat of an earthquake is real.
