South Carolina was hit by a strange earthquake that was felt by nearly a thousand people

Here's something you won't hear very often. South Carolina was hit by an earthquake on Saturday that was strong enough that it was felt by nearly a thousand residents, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

This earthquake was confirmed by the USGS east of Elgin, South Carolina at approximately 9:47 a.m. ET on Saturday, March 9, 2024.

This is the map that the USGS reported feeling. As of this writing, 938 residents said they felt this tremor.

The magnitude of the earthquake confirmed by the US Geological Survey was 2.8, and its epicenter was 5 km east of Elgin, South Carolina.

While South Carolina does not experience earthquakes on a regular basis, the state does have a history of some large earthquakes. According to the South Carolina Emergency Management Department, the state was the epicenter of the largest earthquake in the eastern United States on August 31, 1886 when a 7.3 magnitude earthquake occurred. This earthquake was felt all the way up to New York State. South Carolina is one of the most seismically active states on the East Coast.

If a large magnitude 7+ earthquake like the one in 1886 occurred today, authorities estimate it would likely cost more than 45,000 lives. Fortunately, major earthquakes in South Carolina have been rare. Hopefully, this relatively minor earthquake on Saturday was an isolated earthquake and not a harbinger of a major event in the near future.
