The Vancouver Whitecaps defeated the San Jose Earthquakes 2-0 for their first win of the season

Reserves Alessandro Schopf and Ali Ahmed scored late in the second half as the Vancouver Whitecaps beat the host San Jose Earthquakes 2-0 on Saturday night.

Whitecaps assistant coach Michael D'Agostino earned his first win under coach Vanni Sartini, who is serving a six-game MLS ban for his actions near the end of a Western Conference playoff game against Los Angeles FC last season.

Schopf opened the scoring for the Whitecaps (1-0-1, 4 points) in the 74th minute, just three minutes after coming on as a substitute. A corner kick from Ryan Gould was headed wide but Schopf ran onto the ball and sent a low shot from 20 yards out that Earthquakes goalkeeper Daniel caught but was unable to clear of the net.

Ahmed, who entered in the 62nd minute, equalized the score at 2-0 in the 86th minute. Defender Ranko Veselinovic sent a long ball down the left wing to Ahmed, who shot the ball over a defender with his first touch and it went into the net. His shot from 15 yards found the far net, leaving Daniel no chance.

The first half was scoreless, although San Jose (0-3-0, 0 points) controlled 64 percent of the possession and outscored the Whitecaps 3-1.

The best scoring opportunity of the second half came in the 12th minute, when the Earthquakes got a free kick from 5 yards out just outside the top right corner of the 18-yard box. Christian Espinosa's shot forced Yuhei Takaoka to make a save at the near post.

Daniel made a routine diving save from Gavin Brown's header from a corner kick on Vancouver's only shot of the first period.

San Jose's Amal Pellegrino, the best player in the Norwegian league, had two chances to score his first goal in the American League in the 53rd minute. His first attempt, a side shot from 15 yards from the right side of the penalty area, was blocked by Yuhi Takaoka. After the ensuing corner kick, Pellegrino put a header from 5 yards out over the top right corner of the net.

The Whitecaps almost benefited from a three-on-three counterattack in the 60th minute. Gould dribbled the ball from his side of the midfield until he passed it to Brian White at the top of the penalty area. White's shot appeared to be destined for the bottom left corner of the net, but Daniel made a collision attempt and pushed the ball wide of the post.
