The fourth earthquake to hit the Southeast in as many days did so in Tennessee earlier today. According to the USGS, a 2.0 magnitude earthquake struck south of Greenback, Tennessee at 7:08 a.m. Greenback is located less than 50 miles south of Knoxville and about 175 miles north of Atlanta, Georgia. The earthquake was too weak to cause any damage or casualties.

Other earthquakes that struck the southeastern United States were a 1.6 magnitude event near Glenville, North Carolina, on the 8th, and two earthquakes yesterday in Elgin, South Carolina.

According to the Tennessee Department of Conversation's Geology Division (TNDoCDG), “Few people think about earthquake risk in Tennessee, yet parts of the state are classified as above-average hazard areas. The far western portion of the state shook violently in 1811-1812 , and severe damage from another event is likely throughout West Tennessee. All of East Tennessee is within an area where moderate damage is possible.

Today's earthquake occurred in what is known as the Appalachian Mountains region. “There are several faults associated with mountain-building episodes that ended more than 200 million years ago at the end of the Paleozoic,” according to TNDoCDG. They add: “These faults are no longer active, but even after all this time, the pressure stored deep in these rocks is periodically released in the form of minor earthquakes.”
