The earthquake shook Morris County on Thursday

LONG VALLEY, N.J. — An earthquake shook parts of Morris County and other areas of New Jersey Thursday afternoon, officials confirmed.

The US Geological Survey said that a 2.2 magnitude earthquake occurred at 3 p.m. on Thursday. The epicenter was about three miles north of Whitehouse Station (Reddington) in Hunterdon County.

The USGS allows residents to report if they feel an earthquake, and several people in Long Valley reported feeling weak tremors. Most of the reports were from communities surrounding Hunterdon County, and no residents said they felt anything more than a mild tremor.

The Washington Township Office of Emergency Management shared the USGS findings on Friday, saying some residents inquired about what was happening when they felt the ground shaking.

“The US Geological Survey has confirmed that the earthquake was caused by a minor earthquake,” officials said.
