Top Stories: Try Tim Cook in the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 display size, blockbuster earnings, antitrust hearings

Another busy week of Apple news and rumors came to an end, with much focus on Tim Cook’s appearance in the Congressional Antitrust hearing and the blockbuster earnings report.

Watch more videos by subscribing to MacRumors’ YouTube channel. I’ve heard rumors about the iPhone 12 lineup going forward. This includes unusual admissions from Apple where the lineup will be released “a few weeks later” than usual. We’ll also put together some scaled images so you can see how the new 5.4-inch screen size is small for anyone considering Apple’s upcoming compact flagship iPhone option.

Read below to check out the video above for more on these stories and more about the past week!

How small is the screen of a 5.4-inch iPhone 12? Try it yourself

Apple’s iPhone 12 lineup, announced later this year, is strongly rumored to include a new smaller model with a 5.4-inch display, making it the most compact overall device in size over the years.

But for users of any of Apple’s recent flagship phones, isn’t that screen size too small to consider? We decided to find and create a scaled image of how the iPhone home screen would look on a small screen.

This week, I’ve seen other iPhone 12 news and rumors leaking photos of the RAM portion of the main A14 chip that powers the 5.4-inch display and iPhone 12 models.

Finally, Apple confirmed that the new iPhone lineup will be launched “a few weeks later” than usual, with a debut in October.

Apple Announces Third Quarter 2020 Results: $59.7B Revenue, $11.25B Earnings, 1-to-4 Stock Split

Despite the global health crisis, Apple reported strong earnings this quarter, recording earnings and earnings per share for the June quarter. Sales of Macs and iPads were very strong, partly due to the transition to a work-at-home environment, but sales of iPhones exceeded expectations due to the popularity of the new iPhone SE.

Apple also announced a 4-to-1 stock split at the end of the month. As a result, the company’s share price dropped to about $100 after breaking above $400 following the earnings report.

Apple CEO Tim Cook testifies at US antitrust hearing

Apple CEO Tim Cook attended a five-and-a-half-hour parliamentary hearing this week, focusing primarily on antitrust and competition issues, with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Alphabet/Google CEO Sundar Pichai, and Facebook CEO Mark. Zuckerberg also participated.

Cook escaped some grills focused on other executives, but while the document released as part of the hearing reveals a little extra, he’s still much about Apple’s policies and actions. Faced the question.

During the hearing, Cook argued that Apple treats App Store developers fairly and that there are many options for a “big battle over the market share of the smartphone business.” They were also asked about the controversy over the parental control app, Apple’s Screen Time feature, and the recent “Hey” email app.

In another document shared by the committee, Apple considered increasing fees for some subscription apps from the usual 30% to 40% in 2011, so that Apple could get Amazon Prime in 2016. It has become apparent that you have considered halving Amazon’s fees for the App Store video app.

Batteries likely to include the following MacBook Air in the certified list

We expect the MacBook Air to be one of the first Macs to move from Intel processors to Apple Silicon later this year, and a new battery regulatory certification for the MacBook Air was recently published online.

We don’t know when the MacBook Air will be released, but the Apple Silicon version is planned for the end of the year. Meanwhile, leaky Jon Prosser said the updated iMac was launched in August and is trying to defeat the rumor that its debut last weekend is imminent.

Apple’s patent suggests that two iPads can be connected together for notebook-style computing

The pair of patents unveiled this week shed light on some of the interesting work Apple is doing, but it’s hard to say whether any technology will be reflected in future products. The first patent targets dock accessories that allow two tablet devices, such as an iPad, to be connected together and operated just like a notebook computer.

The second is a headphone that uses a hybrid audio system that combines traditional airborne audio transmission with bone conduction, avoiding some of the drawbacks of regular bone conduction audio implementations.

VMware engineer confirmed that a bug in macOS Catalina 10.15.6 causes a crash in virtualization

macOS Catalina 10.15.6 seems to have serious bugs affecting virtualization software such as VMware and VirtualBox. The bug seems to cause repeated crashes when trying to run the virtual machine, and it seems that a fix from Apple is needed to resolve the issue.

In the meantime, users should avoid upgrading to 10.15.6, or at least shut down unused virtual machines and restart them often to avoid crashes.

Mac OS 8 emulator available as a downloadable app

Old-fashioned Mac enthusiasts may be interested in the fact that Mac OS 8 is now available as an app for macOS, Windows, and Linux.

Slack developer Felix Rieseberg converted the entire 1991 Macintosh Quadra with Mac OS 8.1 into a single Electron app.
