A 5.3 magnitude earthquake north of Tokyo – DW – 03/21/2024

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.3 struck eastern Japan on Thursday morning, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

No tsunami warning was issued in the aftermath.

Likewise, the US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a medium-sized earthquake, initially measuring 5.2, about 4 kilometers east of Kasukabe – a city with a population of about 230,000.

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the earthquake was at a depth of 50 kilometers (about 30 miles), and said that its epicenter was in the southwest of Ibaraki Prefecture.

Earthquakes are common in the area

In Japan, there is a separate seismic scale known as the Shindo seismic scale, which expresses the degree of shaking on the surface in the event of an earthquake.

Areas closest to the epicenter scored -5 on a scale of 0 to 7, a level that predicts some disruption and damage but likely no serious danger.

No damage or injuries were immediately reported. However, bullet trains stopped running between Tokyo and Koriyama in the Fukushima region in northeastern Japan as a result of a power outage, public broadcaster NHK reported.

Hiroyuki Sanada, an official at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, said that “no abnormality” had been reported at the Tokai Daini nuclear plant in Ibaraki. The factory was shut down for safety checks after the earthquake.

Japan experiences about 1,500 earthquakes every year, which represents about 18% of the world's earthquakes.
